On your first day of employment you will spend a couple of hours on orientation learning about the hotel, our involvement with Relais & Chateaux, health and safety, policies overview, company benefits and tour of the hotel.
Within a month or two of starting, you will be aske to attend a one day induction to learn about the company in more detail. This is a fun and interactive day involving team bonding activities with other new starters, a mini wine tasting, more background details on the company and what's important around here, plus a three course dinner with matching wines at either The Vineyard or our 4 star hotel, Donnington Valley.
Each head of department runs their own 'on the job' training programme to ensure that their team is able to deliver what is expected of them. For example, this would involve regular menu training for restaurant team, and room check training for housekeeping.
As well as on the job training we have a number of online training modules for employees to participate in. The topics include wine, food, service the sells, first aid, health and safety, customer service and food allergens.
Every Tuesday a 20 to 30 minute training session will take place at the hotel on topics such as napkin folding, manual handling or fire, greeting a guest, parking a car, art work, history of the building or town, carrying out reviews, bread, finance, marketing and introduction to revenue. The training sessions are open to all employees.
There are a vast number of short courses offered via HIT training, which employees are able to enrol on depending on the entry level requirements for each course. HIT training courses cover many hotel departments and have courses for bar staff, chefs, receptionists, porters, housekeeping, team leaders and waiting staff. For employees wanting to go a step further and study for a longer period of time to obtain a BTEC and NVQ qualifications, HIT also offers apprenticeship training. We are now a Centre of Excellence for the BIIAB (British Institute of Innkeepers Awarding Body) it means we can run their qualifications such as the ALPH (Award for Personal License Holders) and ARAR (Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing).
As part of growing and developing our team, we feel it is really important to train in this aspect of our business not only in terms of knowledge and education but also in terms of legal requirements and compliance.
