Johannes von Stumm
Born in Munich, Germany in 1959, he received his early education at the Gymnasium (Grammar School) at Ettal followed from 1976 to 1980 by attendance at the Gymnasium in his home town of Munich. Subsequently he spent a year working in a stone mason’s workshop before studying Law and Politics at Munich University for three years. However, his real attention was drawn to Sculpture and Fine Art which he studied for four years at the Academy of Fine Art in Munich, receiving a Diploma in 1988.

From completion of his studies Johannes has been engaged continuously in pursuit of excellence in the sculptor’s art, often in association with important fellow artists both in London, New York and many other centres of artistic activity. A Member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors since 1997 he was elected to the Council of the Society in 2003, becoming a Fellow and its Treasurer the following year.

Since 1992 von Stumm’s work has been exhibited regularly in Germany, in London, at the Curwen Gallery, in New York in 2003, and at a variety of other venues in the United Kingdom and on the Continent. Additionally he has been actively engaged teaching and lecturing on art and design at locations such as the New Greenham Common Art Centre and Prior’s Court School, Newbury. As a guest speaker his travels have taken him to the College of Art and Design, Wrexham and, more recently, to the Contemporary Glass Society at Dartington, Devon.

At The Vineyard at Stockcross an elegant example of Johannes’ work may be seen in the restaurant. Titled Arches the sculpture demonstrates his skill in bringing together seemingly incompatible elements of iron, granite and glass to form a four dimensional piece, abstract in conception but visually and aesthetically satisfying.

Johannes von Stumm works from the studio at his home near Wantage: he is married to Carolyn and they have a son and a daughter.
