Toby Ward Born in 1965 Toby was educated at The King’s School, Canterbury, the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst and, after several years in the army, at the City and Guilds of London Art School where he was winner of the Richard Ford Travel Award.
Since leaving the army his artistic career has been both hugely varied and enormously successful. Whether it be a Commission by The National Trust for drawing of restoration of Chastleton House or accompanying H.R.H The Price of Wales to record his tour of the Gulf States, or depictions of the life of the UN troops in Bosnia in 1995, Toby has an acute eye for detail and atmosphere. Painting episodes from the life of Sir Brinsley Ford, C.B.E, followed by a commissioned by 1st Armoured Corps and then one for the rebuilding of The Royal Opera House and similar work for scenes at The Ritz Hotel, London, were accomplishments soon followed by a commission from Associated Newspapers recording President Clinton’s visit to Oxford University in May 2001. In a lighter vein was a series of drawings of The Open at Royal St. George’s, Sandwich, then off to Wales for a private commission to paint a mural.
Toby was appointed Artist in residence at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square in 2003 and, this year received a similar appointment as Artist in residence at the Athenaeum Club.
In addition to his many private and public commissions, including those at The Vineyard at Stockcross depicting ideas and personalities associated with both the initial rebuilding and more recent extension, Toby is increasingly in demand as a portraitist with a painting of H.R.H The Duke of Edinburgh being amongst other distinguished civil and military figures.
Exhibitions have included a number of group shows such The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Discerning Eye, The National Army Museum, Royal Museum, Canterbury, as a Member of The East Kent School of Painters and at Tidal Wave Gallery, Hereford. His only one-man show to date was in 2002 at the Arndean Gallery in Cork Street, in London.
