This is a truly inspirational show about one man’s journey from the front line of war, on the edge of death, to today a happy and contented father, grandfather and national treasure.

The conflict of a generation started on the second of April 1982 when Argentina invaded the Falklands Islands with the aim of recapturing them. With the UK government quick to defend both the islands and its inhabitants the area became a battleground of a generation and in one of the most horrific moments of the conflict the RFA Sir Galahad was bombed by two Argentine planes, aboard at the time was Simon.

Please note this show does contain media which some may find upsetting.

Spotlight on Festival Exhibitors: Two Cocks Brewery

In just under a week we welcome our sixth annual Wine Festival. It is back with a diference. We have invited esteemed friends from the drinks trade, including our brewery partner, Two Cocks Brewery. Here, we learn a little more about them.

Phil and Michael started Two Cocks Brewery in 2011 and now produce award–winning ale in small batches using water drawn from the farm’s borehole.

Using this clear, fresh and sweet tasting water and some of the farm’s own hedgerow hops in every brew gives the beers a distinctive edge.

Hot on sustainability, the spent grain is used to feed the farm’s livestock and the spent hops are used to enrich the soil.

The Two Cocks name and hand-applied feather on every bottle label gives a nod to the brewery’s poultry farm roots and underlines the brewery’s desire to produce artisan beers with a known provenance. The beers have already won 17 major awards and gained a following of several Michelin-starred chefs.

The beers all have Civil War-inspired names in honour of the fact that the brewery is based on a Roundhead encampment of the 1643 battle of Newbury.

Mont Mary Pinot Noir: Icon Wine of the Week

Mont Mary Vineyard from the Yarra Valley in Australia produces a deliciously fruity red. Here our team wax lyrical about this most delicious wine.

Mont Mary
Mount Mary is a family owned, single vineyard estate located in the heart of the Yarra Valley, situated east of Melbourne in the state of Victoria. This gentle north facing slope was first planted to vines in 1972 with 18 varieties on 40 acres. The Pinot Noir vines were sourced from western Victoria in 1971. The older Pinot blocks are a mix of many clones in the order of 30+ and the newer blocks have been planted to American rootstocks. Relatively short fermentations are employed, typically 8-10 days, with no cold soaks or post fermentation maceration. This is followed by 16 months of barrel maturation with minimal filtration prior to bottling.

Wild strawberries, cranberries and cherries dominate the aroma profile. There are subtle hints of mushrooms and earth that will build slowly and become less overpowered by primary fruit with time in the bottle.

On the palate there are flavours of strawberries, rhubarb and quince. There is a firm but fine tannic structure providing some grip, and a strong platform for graceful ageing.

A new look for The Vineyard

The 13th June saw the unveiling of the new-look public spaces at The Vineyard. With over 150 people attending the launch including friends, family and local business people there was definitely a buzz about the place.

Our public space including the reception, bar and casual dining area has been transformed, so now as guests walk through our doors, they will instantly see why we are called The Vineyard.

A dramatic new painting depicting the infamous Judgement of Paris wine tasting in 1976, an impressive glass-floored wine vault containing over 880 bottles giving guests the opportunity to see down to our cellar, and a brand new menu concept are just some of the exciting changes we’ve made.

On the evening of the launch party, Sir Peter gave an informed and entertaining speech about the famous Judgement of Paris wine tasting so guests could understand why Sir Peter commissioned such an impressive painting to depict the event.

As the doors of the wine vault were opened, guests were met with the stunning piece painting adorning the wall in front of them. Guests admired piece of art work painted by artist, Gary Myatt, and the new Taste room as this too has been refurbished throughout.

Now onto the really fun bit of the evening – the blind wine tasting! Guests were given the opportunity to taste two white wines and two red and vote for their favourites. We couldn’t have asked for a more diplomatic result – the French white and the Californian red won the night!

The white wines tasted were:

  • Bourgogne, Chardonnay,Vincent Girardin, Burgundy, France, 2010
  • Waterstone, Chardonnay, Napa, CA, 2010

And the reds:

  • Waterstone, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa, CA, 2007
  • St Émilion, Vieux Château Negrit, Bordeaux, France, 2009

The launch party was a huge success and the team at The Vineyard is looking forward to many more events being held at the hotel in future.

Keep an eye on our new website for news of the exciting wines being lined up for this year’s Vineyard Wine Festival on 26th-27th October. Tickets will be limited.
