Sippin’ on sunshine – summer wines at The Vineyard

Nothing is more refreshing than a crisp, chilled glass of wine on a summer evening. Our head sommelier, Romain, has selected his top six easy-drinking wines to enjoy as the weather heats up.

Bernhard Ott, Grüner Veltliner, Fass 4, Wagram, Austria, 2017 | £47                    Made from a local Austrian varietal from the Wagram region just north-west of Vienna. This example of Grűner Veltliner has subtle aromas of ripe green apple and pear, lemon and a touch of white pepper. It is has a round texture and lively minerality.

Food pairing: Poached egg with green asparagus and hollandaise sauce.

Alsace Pinot Blanc, Josemeyer, Mise de Printemps, France, 2017 | £49
A very exciting grape at the moment, this particular Pinot Blanc mixes freshness, fruit and great texture. The wine is slowly fermented after a gentle pressing of 5-8 hours. It has a gentle, round texture on the palate and shows aromas of ripe pear, juicy red apple and peach.

Food pairing: A delicious wine to have with a salad of cold salmon and a light orange and chilli dressing.

Atelier Kramar, Bohem, Friulano, Brda, Slovenia, 2016 | £64
Made from the Friulano grape that has been kept with the skin for four days, giving a creamy texture and delicate notes of acacia honey. The cooler temperatures of 2016 resulted in a vibrant freshness. The palate develops flavours of ripe orange, dry apricot and light beeswax.

Food pairing:  White meat such as pork or chicken

Joiseph, Roter Faden, Zweigelt/ Pinot Noir/Bläufrankisch, Burgenland, Austria, 2017 | £54
This wine is a perfect example of an easy-drinking red. It has a bright acidity and very low tannins. It is a beautifully versatile red wine as it can be served chilled and pairs well with a variety of foods.

Food pairing: Smoked duck breast with a cranberry or light balsamic dressing

TeMata, Gamay Noir, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, 2018 | £41
Another light red wine made from the Gamay grape (also found in the Beaujolais region in France). This wine shows ripe summer fruit tones as well as a very juicy and crunchy palate. It can be served slightly chilled to lift its fruitiness.

Food pairing: Roasted chicken and mixed vegetables (lightly caramelised in the pan)

Melville, Pinot Noir, Estate, Santa Rita Hills, CA, 2013 | £80
A fresh and juicy Californian Pinot Noir. It comes from a cooler part of the Golden State and is made using only native yeast and old oak barrels. It has delicate cranberry, raspberry and red cherry notes as well as a light spiciness.
