December heralds a plethora of festive fun. We’ve picked our six of the best local events and activities happening in the area for you to enjoy.

Watermill Book Club – The Story of Alice

A good part of our cultural heritage is based on wonderland, and artists, poets, writers and many others have used this theme for over a century. Among this heritage sits the complex history of the author Charles Dodgson, the quiet academic, and his better-known counterpart, Lewis Carroll – storyteller and innovator. This author dreamed up Alice Liddell’s fictional alter ego in the seminal storybook that has spanned generations.
In this evening, Professor Robert Douglas-Fairhurst uses previously unpublished material to bring the timeless legend of ‘Alice’ to light.


Wine School at The Vineyard – Christmas Wines

This evening is quite simple. A collection of bottles suitable for the festive lunch and some tips on what to match with, serving ideas, plus a host of tips on making the most important lunch of the year stress-free!

Join us this New Year’s Eve as we take you on a food and wine matching journey exploring and enjoying wines from 30 to 50° north and south of the equator. Wines flourish between these latitudes and vineyards produce wines of the highest quality. Wine School – England – The Vineyard

Wednesday 4th March – 6.30pm to 8pm

England Just a few years ago, English wine was regarded as a misnomer, how that has all changed! We now can lay claim to producing some of the best sparkling wines to be found anywhere. This school will focus on those great competitors to Champagne of course, but will also have a useful insight into the range of aromatic white wines being produced, along with something pink and red. We will focus on Southern England from Kent to Cornwall.

A fantastic event in Berkshire this March. It’s the 1940’s, women are wearing their hair in victory rolls and dancing with the GI’s whilst Hollywood is booming. The music scene is booming with swing, Jazz and crooners and we’re off for a toe tapping ride across America.

Wildlife Art Exhibition at Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre

Saturday 7th to Sunday 22nd February – 10.30 to 4pm
Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife trusts present the Wildlife Art Exhibition. An exhibition of local artist Jonathan Pomroy will be on display at the Nature Discovery Centre during February.

Jonathan has staged a number of very successful exhibitions at the Nature Discovery Centre (NDC) over the last 20 years, and was in fact the Centre’s very first visitor when they opened the doors on 15th January 1995.

Jonathan has gone on to become a very well known and collected wildlife artist, regularly exhibiting at venues across the country, and has shown at the Mall Galleries with the Society of Wildlife Artists. He has a passion for painting wildlife & landscapes from extensive field work in all weathers.

This exhibition will include 25 of Jonathan’s most recent works including a number of wetland landscapes and bird studies.

Jonathan will also be running a sketching workshop on 7th February.

The Secret Adversary at Watermill Theatre

There are many events in Berkshire this February that are not to be missed including this performance. The Watermill Theatre in association with Eleanor Lloyd Productions are showing Agatha Christie’s The Secret Adversary. A Tommy & Tuppence Thriller. Adapted by Sarah Punshon and Johann Hari.

Agatha Christie’s gripping thriller follows the daring and dizzying adventures of Tommy & Tuppence through 1920s London.

Home from the War, flat-broke and unemployed, our twenty-something heroes embark on a daring business scheme: ‘The Young Adventurers Limited’… willing to go anywhere, willing to do anything. But their first assignment plunges them into more danger than they ever imagined and they quickly find themselves sucked into a perilous world of political intrigue, criminal conspiracy, murder and mayhem.

Launching as part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of the author’s birth, The Secret Adversary takes to the stage for the very first time in this inventive new adaptation shot through with fast-paced action, comedy, live music and a dash of romance.

Spectacular Fireworks Display at Newbury Racecourse
Saturday 1st November – 5.30pm
Newbury Racecourse will be hosting a charity fireworks display this Saturday joined by Roary the Lion and friends. There will also be other entertainment taking place during the evening.

Twelfth Night at The Watermill Theatre

The bet365 Hennessy Festival at Newbury Racecourse

27th to 29th November

Switching on the Christmas Lights at Newbury
Sunday 30th November
One of the last events in Berkshire this November for all the family. Join Santa to make Newbury light up with the switching of the festive lights. There will be a parade which starts at 5:30pm as well as some traditional treats such as a German bratwurst sausage stall and some mouth-watering mulled wine.

There will be live music throughout the day and stalls selling some quirky Christmas gifts, and at 6.30pm the Christmas lights switch-on will take place on Wharf Street.

There will be hot food, sweets and doughnuts available in the Market Place so come along and enjoy the fun and bring the whole family!

7th October – An Audience with Kate Adie at Watermill Theatre

Kate became the BBC’s chief news correspondent in 1989, and has reported from war zones around the world. She has won numerous awards including three Royal Television Society awards, the BAFTA Richard Dimbleby Award, the Broadcasting Press Guild’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting and also was awarded an OBE in 1993. Kate also presents ‘From Our Own Correspondent’ on BBC Radio 4 and is the author of four bestselling books.

Hear about her extraordinary career and life experiences as well as hearing about her new book, Fighting on the Home Front, a story of the First World War years through the eyes of women. Also take advantage of meeting the lady herself in the bar for tea and cake.

8th October – The Vineyard becomes The Ginyard

Gin has had a massive resurgence in popularity in recent years, with many small craft distilleries popping up all over the country, even in peoples’ living rooms! Join us for this gin masterclass as we take you through the history of gin, and then have a go at blending your very own gin with the most popular botanicals. We’ll also give you tips on the different garnishes and how to serve the perfect gin and tonic or gin cocktail.

13th-17th October – Hamlet at Watermill Theatre
7.30pm and matinees at 2.30pm
A Shakespeare classic. When his father dies suddenly in suspicious circumstances, Hamlet returns home to find that his mother has married his uncle, who now rules Denmark in his father’s place. Torn between desire for revenge and loyalty to his mother, gripped by indecision, Hamlet must forge a new future for himself and the world of Denmark.

This production features the original text cut to a fast-paced 75 minutes, performed by just three actors in a contemporary setting, and follows the success of their previous touring productions, Romeo + Juliet, Othello, and Faustus.

14th – 15th October – Pride And Prejudice at The Corn Exchange

One of the most romantic stories of all time with two actors, 21 characters, lots of laughs. This is your chance to catch the five Bennett sisters and the whole world of Austen.

This highly praised production, which premiered at the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds in 2013, have sold out audiences and are now on a full UK tour.

Meet the cast yourself afterwards at the 7.45pm show on Tuesday 14 October.

17th October – An Evening with Sacred Distillery
7pm
If you enjoy gin and gin cocktails, join us for an evening with Sacred Distillery hosted by the Founder, Ian Hart. Sacred is craft distillery in North London, which was founded in 2009. 25th October – Armed Forces Raceday at Newbury Racecourse
A fantastic finale to the Flat season featuring the Group 3 Worthington’s Whizz Kids Stakes and the Group 3 Worthington’s Champion Shield Stakes. There’s free entry for Armed Forces, MOD Civil Servants, RBL members and their families to this great family raceday, featuring the Launch of the Berkshire and the Vale of the White Horse Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
