My love affair with Californian wines, and determination to produce my own, was promoted by Peggy Lee and two bottles of corked Burgundy in 1972.
Fifteen years on, from mountainous vineyards benefiting from rocky soils and the cool climate of Sonoma Valley, the Peter Michael Winery is producing wines in such high demand that they are available only on a restricted allocation basis.
At the Vineyard at Stockcross, Joao and I have put together a list of wines from my own and other small, family-owned vineyards. This was not an easy task, for the annual output of these special vineyards can be sold within a hundred miles of their origin. Nevertheless, with the help of my friends in California who, like me, believe that mountain vineyards, classical winemaking and limited production are the essential criteria for fine wines.
I have gathered together a list which represents the very best of California. Our team of Sommeliers are on hand to discuss the individual merits of each. I hope that you will enjoy these wines, matched with wonderful fresh food and return to discover more.

In 1982 Sir Peter Michael established the Peter Michael winery on a square mile of rocky volcanic ridges that form the western face of Mount St. Helena in Sonoma County. From the beginning, the wine growing philosophy was modeled on the French tradition infused with a few modern influences:
- One, the vineyard terroir would be the single most important feature.
- Two, the wines would be elegant rather than overstated.
- Three, there would be a hundred-year commitment to the development of a great estate.
